Loughborough LRC goes on the pull!
So one evening in 2010 the committee were all sat around a table discussing ways of raising the clubs profile, someone mentioned that a local rugby club pulls an artic unit through the Soar Valley every summer for a local charity. Whilst Tristan was keen for this we decided we didn't want to drag him and his lorry around the town! We decided a Land Rover needed to be the vehicle and to cut a lot of hassle out it would be good if it could be done as part of another event.
After a few phone calls we agreed we could do the 101 sponsored pull as part of Loughborough University's RAG parade in October. The day dawned and we had about 12 volunteers for the pull and the 101 was suitably decorated with various banners and flags, it has to be said the first third of the parade was not fun as the pace away from the university can only be described as very quick, we were at times actually running, and at no point had that been part of the deal! Once the parade was into town and the wagons slowed we kept the pace quite well and after approximately 2hrs we were heading back to the uni's gates! We had pulled the 101 every inch of the 3 mile route and were all suitably knackered but even on the finish line there was talk of next year! In the end the club raised £265 from the pull and this was added to the rest of the Rag committee's proceeds to donate of £1500 to the mayors local charity STEPS of Shepshed.
The RAG Parade has know become an annual event in the club calender we had a fantastic turn out for the 2011 event and although we didn't collect sponsorship the club did a brilliant job at promoting the start of the 2011 poppy appeal for the Royal British Legion. Many thanks to Mick Wells of the RBL for the poppy's and bunting, to Mick Severn with his wonderful poppy suit as the poppy man and also the cadets and staff of 2229 Sqn Loughborough ATC for their help in decorating the 101. Photo's of the 2011 event can be found under socials.
