My first Land Rover was a series 3 SWB 2 ¼ petrol called ‘The Betty’ (after the ship in Alien Resurrection) I had lots of fun tinkering with her, she was faithful but I never went off road with her. The enjoyment was gained by doing her up and getting to know more about land rovers, which helped develop the love for the vehicles. When we moved to the Loughborough area she didn’t take kindly to the move and developed engine trouble. She was sold, which was one of my most upsetting days. I sulked for a year pestering to get another land rover, which I did, in the end.
The new Land Rover is a 90 2.5 TD which has seen better days but I have been told that he is still running in.
It was not a smooth start to the partnership having found out that he needed a new radiator and various other bits and bobs which are being done as and when they can be and when money is spare (the joys of having a Land Rover)
The main job is to try and sort out the electrics as a previous owner enjoyed doing a bit of DIY eclectics just not very well!
Joining the club has been very good for finding other people with the same interest - land rovers mainly and gaining that much needed lifeline for help.
I still have to name her names so far are star bug, boil, shooters shed.
(The last two are from non-Land Rover lovers)
But the name that I like the most is Brian after Brian the snail of magic roundabout
Update January 2008
Up to date I have now put chequer plating in the back, got rid of the electrics from the previous owner, tided the dash up and put a dog guard in to stop things joining me in the front when off roading.
I have put new wheels and mud tyres on all round and added a roof rack complete with sand ladders for the floor of the roof rack. Brian has undergone a complete service with a new alternator and a new set of injectors. I have set the valve clearances and put on a new head and manifold gasket. All this has helped stop the smoking and increased the power and quietness of Brian.
He now acts a lot better on and off the road the only problem is I have still not found the oil leak that all land rovers are supposed to have!!
