My 1993 200tdi 90 started life as a farmers hack in Ireland, but over the last two years and some generous sponsorship from eBay and the kitchen woman I have altered it somewhat.
I had an idea in my head about what I wanted it to ‘morph’ into however realism kept rearing it’s ugly head, so, I compromised and came to a deal with reality.
Firstly I raided the eBay parts bin and got lots of very ‘necessary’ shiny bits and pieces, which included a pair of sides with windows so the kids could see what was going on. Next was a pair of tilting forward facing seats and the seatbelts to go with them. This meant that I had to sweep out all the various detritus associated with the rear of a farm vehicle. Once cleaned and disinfected I lined the lot with a close approximation of a Land Rover carpet, which cut down on the noise quite a bit. (always good news when you run a Landy). The old van sides where swapped for a nice set of Disco five spoke alloy wheels, which was a good deal for something that was excess to requirements. I got my Macho tyres off the Internet, which was only £250 for four brand new tyres delivered, spot on.
On a trip up to the Mansfield area I picked up a rear door also two very nice leather Range Rover comfy seats. Next came the long process of trying to find a couple of decent doors, which, if you have ever tried you will know that most are in a bad state with the dreaded aluminium rust. So once again Ebay to the rescue and one door fetched from London and one from Rotherham. At this stage my Landy resembled a clown’s car with most panels a different colour, but I didn’t care, as I was getting closer to my vision. I changed the old square reversing and fog lights for Td5 round ones and painted the front light surrounds grey to resemble the SE version. Finished with clear light lens and coloured bulbs all round.
My last trip to Billing turned up a set of two inch spacers, Goodrich hoses and some 30mm wheel spacers to stop the tyres rubbing on the radius arms. Things were looking good. A splash of Mazda blue paint, a bit of checker plate bling and some extra lights to finish the look.
Can you believe that the kitchen woman wants me to do non Landy maintenance now I have finished it! Little does she know that it never ends…
