My First Tixover

E-mail Print

Club member, Carl Shooter was so delighted with his first visit to Tixover Quarry, off the A47 near Peterborough that he had to write about it.

Tixover is an ideal site to visit as an intoduction to off-roading and has a multitude of varying features, from soft easy going ground to steep hills for acent / decent and a clay pit for the more adventurous.

Name

Having been with the club for nearly one year I was finally persuaded to go to a quarry day. The day was an early start meeting Tim & Tracey and Chappo in the jet garage. We drove to Tixover picking up Birdy with Jaffa on the way.The entrance to the quarry shielded the view of the site which then opened up to reveal the site in its full glory.

After a 10 minute view of the place and to see what other people where doing I was taken round by Tim in Trevor. We went round the back of the quarry- but not into the clay pit which is the downfall of many land rovers. This enabled Tim to give me the basics to enjoy the day, what to look out for and what gear to be in up and down the slopes. Finally it was my turn to go round starting with small lumps to build up my confidence and get me used to changing gears.

After this I went round the site wading through some of the water pools that are at the back of the site near the clay pit knowing that I could get through them and if there was a problem that help could get to me. Next we had a small stop for something to eat where we discussed the fact that Chappo had not taken many photos which he said that was all he was going to do But true to form Chappo damaged his truck managing to keep his record of breaking something on his truck every time he goes out. After lunch and watching other people at the site we went round the site again. This time I was a little more daring, having gained my confidence with the site, my truck and a little more confidence in my driving I tried something that looked, as I thought, out of my ability but managed it with ease.

After this the quarry started to get churned up and the group decided to go back to Loughborough, some of us with a smile on our faces so big, others thinking of the work that needed to do to be done to the trucks. All in all a very good day was had by all and I will endeavour to go again.
